Libya: Clashes in Tripoli leave 8 dead

Clashes between rival factions have resumed in Tripoli. Residents of the Libyan capital witnessed violent scenes like this one on Thursday and Friday as government militias and groups qualified as extremists by the government of national unity collided.

The fighting resulted in eight deaths within 48 hours according to the United Nations. The UN envoy to Libya Martin Kobler said he is in contact with rival camps to end the fighting.

Meanwhile the US Secretary of State John Kerry on his part reacted saying that diplomacy is the only possible solution and therefore foreign military intervention should be out of the question.

The unity government set up under the watch of the international community in March is facing resistance from rival groups and also the Islamic State fighters.

Tripoli residents have continued to live in a state of fear and insecurity since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
